Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Ok, i need a little help from the more experienced out there.
Im trying to get the rest of the tools and gadgets i need ....
I am looking at getting a cake stand, but i see that there are so many different types, from really studry (cast iron of sorts) to plastic. Along with that, the price differences.
Can any of you give me some advice ?
If i dont have to spend a ton of money, i dont want to. But if it worth spending then i dont mind.

thanks in advance =-)

Are you looking for a cake stand or for a turntable? My first one was the Wilton turntable... it worked ok... but not real well with heavier cakes. Then one day on Amazon... the Fat Daddios turntable that is somewhere around $60 was on sale for 12.99!!! And if you spent $25 you got free shipping so... the shipping was $13 so I got 2 of them for $26 and shipped free! I LOVE the Fat Daddios turn table. It is so smooth and works fantastic. And I have a second one if I ever need it!!! So keep your eyes on Amazon or Ebay... they are cheaper just don't get a plastic one...
I've got the Fat Daddios one as well, but it cost me $80 Canadian!! You got an amazing deal..I guess from now on I'll check out Amazon and ebay for deals!

i bought a lazy susan cake stand from ikea it fits a 16inch cake 5.99best buy i ever made
I am still using my first one...the Wilton Turntable...but as previously said..it doesn't work to well with heavier cakes...as soon as we are done moving and my cake area is set up again..I will finally be getting a new one...I have heard great things about the Fat Daddio's turn table!

But for just starting out...it worked great for me.
thanks guys, i had thought that the wilton plastic stand might not be sturdy enough but wasnt sure.
sounds like that fat daddios is worth it.

There arrnt any cake supply stores where im at so i have to order everything online and im not able to check
things out first.

i really appreciate all your advice, thank you SO much !
happy baking =-)
Wish we were closer... I'd sell you the second one I have for what I got it for!
yea, that would be great ! but i bet the shipping would be alot, that thing must be heavy =-)
They are very heavy... not sure what the shipping would be but sure it would not be cheap. I know it costs me sometimes 25 to 30 to get a 20 lb bucket of fondant shipped from the East coast so am sure this is about the same weight.
yea, i did work out the cost of getting fondant shipped and it looks to be about 25 ish.

my boyfriend said he would try and make me a stand (using some sort of ballbearing plate) said he could do it for really cheap, if it didnt work then its not like much is lost.
hes pretty handy, so ill let you know how it turns out. if not ill be saving for a fat daddios ! LOL
My old cheap mixmaster died and the turntable on that was still good - it seemed such a shame to throw the whole lot out. I Cut a piece of MDF, drilled a hole, put some feet on the bottom and pushed the turntable spindle into it and voila! It spins so smoothly and it is heavy because of the timber.
Bettina, thats a great idea !

we made one this past weekend ... im still painting & stenciling it, but heres an unfinished picture
we made the bottom part that has the lazy susan parts seperate so i also have regular cake stand if i want
(it works really really nice for 35.00 =-)

What a great job! It's funny in our house I'm the handy, er, person. I'm the one who gets the power tools for Christmas and birthday and Mother's day. I feel a woman with power tools and a staple gun can rule the world. LOL
