I am just a hobby baker right now too. Just word of mouth. I do not advertise. I am o.k. with the health dept. Once I get really busy, they said I have to have a separate kitchen at that point. Right now I average about one a week, every week. They don't have a problem with it. But now I am turning cakes away, so it's time I decide what I want to do.
I will look up your facebook page. :)

He was here in Ottawa last January. He actually picked my "fish" cake as one of his "seal of approval" cakes. I got him to autograph a picture of it, and his book. He really is pretty down to earth, fun kind of guy. If you go on his Cake Boss page on Facebook, under "wall photos" you will see it there. I was pretty thrilled that day, as there were over 10,000 entries. TLC was actually supposed to feature it on their website, but I have not seen or heard anything about it.
I decided not to go back to work after maternity leave. I am slowly building a cake business and I am now at the point of needing my own kitchen. I am turning down orders now. If you like, you can see most of my cakes at www.facebook.com/twistedsugarcakery
That's wonderful! Kananta is only 25mins from me. I love living here. I moved here 11 years ago. I'll be down in Acton for Christmas this year. My brother lives there.

OMG, you are soooo funny!! Believe it or not, where i live all my neighbors go to Costco to get their cakes, one of the neighbors just found out iam a cake artist and he blasted my out for not letting anyone know. He said he was tired of getting those dried tastless box cakes from Costco!
Thanks so much june, iam self taught and sometimes its hard, but i keep trying. LOL on your sis-in-law, my neice did the same thing, figuring if i have gotten this far without classes she could, her experience with fondant had her never wanting 2do it again. if you are interested i did a tutorial on the Standing Dora the Explorer cake. visit my blog at monicacakeblog.myblogsite.com, it will come up monniemon's blog. as you read(click more) at the bottom of the paragraph for photos. Hope you find it helpful for future cakes. Iam going to be putting up other tutorials soon, i thinking of making one for the cake for next week. If i do i will message you.
wow, i understand, especially the customers that you know, who want something for nothing. I recently was asked to make a wedding cake for a friend of the family, who we hadnot heard from in several years. All of a sudden here she is wanting a cake with so much detail, such a s fabric pleating, pearls, edible diamonds and flowers for 175 people and she tells me her budget is $250, so i told her it was not possible, thats not even $2.00 a slice. She got offended, and with her attitude also went the pending bridal shower cake her mom wanted to get. I say good, atleast if i keep it at home baking for family and friends of family, i can turn down anyone i so choose. I really enjoy what i do, but iam not gonna be taken advantage of.
thanks june, she drove me crazy for that wedding. I realize i did way to much, from my gown to the castle cake, i was down for 2weeks! but it was beautiful.
