Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

This is a quick cake I made yesterday for Fathers Day. I had leftover pound cake in the freezer, so I thought I'd put something together. My hubby, Steve, has a pair of trusty beat up old work boots he uses for all kinds of stuff, so I tried to replicate. To me they represent every "Hard Working Dad".
I gotta say, I have great admiration for those that carve & sculpt cakes. I thought this was fiddly enough. Couldn't imagine a large project. I was going for deep brown in the shoe, alas, it became grey. Oh well, he'll appreciate the cake despite the colour....if he even notices...

Thanks Sandra & Katy. I loosely used a YouTube video from Hello Cupcakes. Got the idea of using licorice for laces. Of course you can see the product used, but not exactly type/kind needed etc. Well I pulled licorice through the eyelets, everything started to rip.....grrr. Deep breath...plan B. Attach eyelets, cut the licorice so it looks like laces. That's the part I disliked the most Sandra....the eyelets. All I could see was imperfections. YouTube video had boot covered in rolled & cutout caramel panels. Ha!!! That was a disaster. When I attached, within seconds caramel became hard and brittle. Couldn't smooth, couldn't roll under the edges....so fondant it became.. But guess the little "mistakes" made it old looking, which is what I was trying to achieve. And the board Sandra, took like 15 min. start to finish to do.

What a great idea for a father's day cake, June.  You did a beautiful job, on the cake board, too.  My favorites are the eyelets for the strings, nice detail :o)
