Oh Martin

So sorry. I did a lot of that when Mom was sick. Working full time, back & forth, trying to keep up Dad's morale.... then she passed and he was, like your Dad, totally lost. 60 yrs married.. long time. Dad's gone now too.  Hang in there Martin... this is going to sound crazy, but even tho it was a very tough time, I have some wonderful memories. We had a lot of chats that are so sweet to remember now.  Sending prayers your way....  :o)

Hi Lynette , the gum try or tylose powder you mix into the fondant which will make it firm enough not to squash the sponge too much , about a teaspoon per kilo of fondant is usually ok but does depend how the weather is , sometimes you need a bit more !
Hi June , hope you well !
Yes have been busy , work is so busy , cakes are busier , and doing a lot of too-ing and fro-ing to my dads , only 40 minutes away , lost my mum 3 months ago was unexpected even though she was ill , my dad has been her carer for 16 yrs and is a lot lost , but is coping remarkably well !
So I don't get a lot of time to pop in on you young ladies !

Hi Lynette ,
It was I think it was a 10 or 12 inch square tin using a Madeira cake mix , trimmed one side and stood it up !
When you add your filling it is easier to put in two kebab skewers to steady the cake while putting the fondant icing on , one side then the other , if u roll out both sides this will make it easier to do .
I usually give my 3D cakes a rough covering first , let them settle a bit , you will need an additive of gum trag , tylose or cmc, to enable it to stand the weight of the icing .
When firm and smooth ish ! I add a second layer , colour of choice ! , this one can be thinner and you get a better finish !
Sounds a lot to do but I find is the best way to get them to stand .
Sorry , after the first covering is firm you can remove the skewers !
Good luck !!
M xx
