Hi Deborah,
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. this week has been mad!!!!!!!!!!
I used a 6" and a 10" but you could use a 4" and an 8"
Yes it is a craft wire sometimes called florist wire or paper covered wire.
I always add tylo powder to my fondant (only when modeling or decorating with it) to keep their shape (roughly 1 teaspoon to 200gr of paste)
No wire for the 18. I make my own sugar paste and this dries to a solid state. If you wold like the recipe it's on my facebook page, google 'ann pallett bake me a cake' and google should find my fb page for you ( I'm hoping you have an account) click on Photos then on albums and then on recipes and information. the recipe is in there under sugar paste.
The balls are made with fondant with the tylo added, they keep their shape sooooooooooo much better if you use tylo (CMC and gum tragacanth does the same job)
Wishing you lots of luck with your daughters 18th birthday cake. please don't hesitate to ask more questions. Ann
