2 tiers, 7" & 9", wasc cake, almond buttercream w/fondant accents. 1st time using the Marvelous Mold chevron onlay. Wasn't too happy w/the results. Maybe next time will be better.

They always....always make things look easier in videos. Never is... As I told Goreti, I watched a video when I made my boot cake...ah ya...I ended up doing it my own way...

Actually Katy, they did. The video was done by the guy who had actually created the onlay molds for Marvelous Molds who made it look like a "piece of cake"...lol. The other tutorial I read was written by a cake blogger who who had used this particular onlay mold for the 1st time. She was the one who suggested putting the cake in the freezer. She had posted a picture of the finished cake she had done & it was beautiful & her chevron design was perfect. They both made it look & sound so easy for them but for me, not so much.

soooo cute Denise.  I find a lot of these moulds etc., are never as easy as they make it look.  Also I bet the tutorial didn't have it on buttercream?

Thanks so much ladies. Yes, the onlay mold is tricky. I watched the video & read a tutorial on how to use it. The 1st problem I ran into was I didn't have a pasta roller attachment for my KA mixer & that's not something you can just run out and buy on the spot. I had to roll out the fondant myself & it has to be just right or it won't work. The 2nd problem was the tutorial I had read suggested putting the cake in the freezer before & after adding each piece. Well, after I had finished adding all the chevrons & left it out of the freezer all the colors began to drip & run into one another b/c of the condensation. Talk about your hot mess (literally, b/c my a/c still wasn't working). It was tedious, but working w/a paintbrush, I managed to clean it all up & patch up spots where the paintbrush had taken off some of the icing. I just turned the really bad part toward the back so it wouldn't show. Will try it again b/c I refuse to be defeated...lol.

Very cute--those onlay molds can be a little tricky to use
