Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Head is vanilla pound cake, covered w/ BC icing, fondant and hand made modeling chocolate. I hand rolled the eyeballs from Isomalt. Used my fondant tools to carve in all the details and airbrushed the coloring/shading. Piping gel & red coloring gel made for some grooooosome blood. I hand sculpted the hand from modeling chocolate and also airbrushed it to finish it off.

Just wanted to congratulate you on your win Ginger. I've loved many of the entries to this contest - but yours just blew me away for it's realism. Great job x

Yes, thats exactly what I did...I worked the clear Isomalt with my mat until It was cooled enough to pick up and roll into a ball.  Then I colored what was left and poured out a small dot size for the colored part of the eye and then placed the clear eye on top of the warm, colored dot and smoothed down the edges.  I don't have a sphere mold, so had to do this all by hand and it turned out pretty good for a dead guy.  I had planned on making them lighter, but I colored the isomalt too dark and just went with it.  I did hand brush some white on the eyes though before I brushed them with the confectioners glaze.  Yeah, I think they would have looked much better if they were lighter, so you're on the right track.  :o)

You said you hand rolled the eyeballs.  Do you mean that as they cooled enough to handle, you rolled them?  That sounds like a great idea.  I was thinking of putting a little white in mine.  He's supposed to be a zombie coming out of a grave.  What do you think?
