I make mine using my regular icing gels.  It doesn't have to be powder.

Thanks :) Yeah you can color you own sugar using powder color. The pre-made stuff is pretty cheap though, I get it in 6lb cartons for around ten bucks a pop.

Oooooooh.....I really like this.  Cool technique.   Love, love the sparkle. I have just recently heard of sanding sugar.  Actually found a site that tells you how to make r own.

Gotcha - pics can be so misleading sometimes especially from one computer screen to another, so I wasn't sure what I was looking at.  I thought - this has to be sugar... but the texturing threw it off in the pic.  Great job!!

It's sanding sugar.  She wanted sparkley...  I textured the butter cream underneath like suede with a pastry brush.

Looks nice.  What did you coat it with?  My gut says sugar, but in some pics it looks fuzzy, like you are representing some sort of suede.  I like it either way.
