Bonnie, my gum paste is nothing but glucose, Gum-Tex, powdered sugar and water and it is pretty awful. Since it drys as hard as a rock, I don't know if even your grands would (or could) eat it. But, my homemade fondant is another story :o) It is tasty.
Yes, June, they took a bunch of hours. That is why I was finally so tired of working on them.
I am planning to enter the wedding cake competition at the Tennessee State Fair in September. They will serve as the topper and tropical flowers will decorate the rest of the cake. I started three Birds of Paradise this morning and intend to try Hawaii Ginger, White Orchids and Hibiscus, all with their foliage. I may have bitten off more than I can chew because I have never done any of these and have no cutters or veiners so they will all be freehand (I do have a sharp knife lol).
As I said before, I have never even seen a cake show, so have no idea what to expect. I just want to acquit myself well enough to not be embarrassed. Boy, I sure hope I am not walking into something like the Tulsa State Fair or the Capitol City Cake Show, which I have seen on line, because I KNOW I am not ready for that!
HMMMM... the fact that they will eat ANYTHING, is not necessarily a compliment, is it? lol
Katy, she hasn't tasted my gumpaste... The kids fight over who is going to eat what!! And when they are making something with it, by the time they get done, they are lucky to have enough left to finish the project! They make no bones about looking at me with a mouth that is FULL! lol I can't leave even a leaf out, or they will eat it first, and ask permission later. And my roses fair no better. And the funny part is, they don't seem to even mind how old, what they are eating, is! LOL
lol you two!
LOL! Bonnie, you are so funny! Even though the birds are made from food products, we all know they do not taste good enough to eat. Gum paste tastes like sweet paper to me. Since these two are slated to top a show cake, they will be coming back home with me....unless, of course, during the transporting or the event itself they get broken. Mike says the birds are protected but the cake is expendable :o)
OK, little miss philosopher! If you feel that way, I am going along to protect those 2 birds!!
Oddly enough, it has never bothered me to cut the cake...probably because I already have pictures and because everyone has already enjoyed it's appearance. It is the pleasure and joy in the faces of the people receiving the cake that makes it all worthwhile. Somehow, it makes all the hours, struggles and anxiety vanish right away. Then, as Buddy Valasto says, "anybody want to eat some cake?"!
Your husband probably only says that to try to relieve your stress because I know he appreciates what you do. How could he not!
The last thing you should feel is silly Sandra! It must be so satisfying to be so good at something and so creative. Mind you, I do know a little what you mean - I get so 'finnicky' about my cakes and want everything to be perfect (which they never are), I think it drives my husband nuts. He says things like ' at the end of the day, it's a birthday cake. They're going to look at then slash lumps out of it' Helpful eh?
