Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I wanted to enter this in the holiday contest but saw the 30 cake rule. I just started decorating 11 months ago and have never taken any kind of cake decorating class...just like to watch the cake decorating shows on tv. This is a cake that I made for a party at my Mom's elementary school . This was a challenge because this is the first time that I tried sculpting with buttercream. The entire Santa face is sculpted buttercream frosting on a regular 6" cake. My airbrush gun kept clogging up when I was spraying the bricks so I was afraid to use it on Santa's face. I think I could have made his face look more realistic if I could have airbrushed in some highlights. I brushed on powdered food coloring around his eyes and on his cheeks but it wouldn't go on smooth..his cheeks kinda looked chapped but I guess that's ok since Santa does brave the elements and I'm sure he has chapped cheeks right? The bottom teir is a new recipe that I call a "Mounds" Cake. It is coconut cake with chocolate ganache and coconut cream filling. Santa cake is vanilla

Do you realize how incredibly talented you are?  I honestly believe you need to be entering big cake shows...you could be famous...and get lots and lots of business, if you wanted it.

I used the viva paper towel method to smooth and push the frosting were I needed it.  For the wrinkles I piped on a little extra frosting, held a paper towel on top and then used a fondant tool to run it across the top of the paper towel...if that makes any sense??  His eyes were blue buttercream smoothed out and then dark black blue coloring dabbed on top and a little white buttercream to finish off the sparkle in his eyes.

Angel, this is terrific!  I don't know how on earth you did his face in buttercream!  How did you make his wrinkles?  Did you paint his eyes right onto the buttercream?  Good job!
