I'll add my 2c to this conversation...Steve you need to charge more, Your work is worth more even in your area. When I did a lot of wedding cakes (I don't do that many now, to hard for me to deliver anymore, walking is difficult)  my base price is $3.75 per. and my work is sooooo way below yours. Most of the people here charge at least 3.75 to 4.00 to 4.50. (not chain stores). What you do looks as good or better than some of the  so called "top decorators". Your designs, and flowers are beautiful.

Wow, Steve, only $3.60 pr serving!  I had to read that twice to make sure I was seeing correctly.  I totally agree with Katy.  Your work is top notch and deserves (a lot) more  than $3.60 per serving.

What's the first thing you hear from a person ordering a $400 B-day cake?

(that they think will cost $100)

"Well....I only need a small cake...."

(that turns out to be 3 tiers....3 different flavors....3 different fillings......topsy-turvy.....with 3 different colors of icing......with SpongeBob sculpted on the top....and Patrick on the bottom......and Mr. Krabs....and all the shells...and custom lettering.....and free delivery...and....and.....and..."

You all know what I mean LOL. The B-Day cake world is for masochists only.

LOL that'd be tough......2 kids in college and parents to look after here......so I plan to use my cakes to promote the tools/techniques. Probably make alot more that way. One can only make so many high end cakes- more than 2 of these a week is tough. We stopped the birthday/small cakes 2 yrs ago to concentrate on weddings.

wow - that's so cheap for something like you produce.  I'm quite sure you could hit the big time in a large city!

Thanks Katy- That means alot to me. I work in a small town in Kentucky, but we do serve Paducah, Hopkinsville, Clarksville TN and sometimes Nashville. But we only charge $3.60/serving to compete with other area cake people. It seems many brides choose their cake artist by price only LOL, and it's dog-eat-dog in this economy. I wonder what I get get if I was in a big city? When we deliver to Nashville our cakes get the same response as here.....you would think there would be some killer cake people in Nashville....it being Music City and all......the last one we delivered to Brentwood (just south on Nashville) and I swear I thought I was driving through Beverly Hills. Gated/Guarded neighborhoods with 5 mil and up homes. Wow. made me feel like a pauper!!!

you know, I look at quite a lot of cakes, being admin on two cake sites and, hand on heart, Steve, I don't believe I have ever seen anything that matches your work.  You are an artist.
