Over the years I have developed my own technique for the smooth areas like the faces and hands. I cut a window out of waxed paper, the shape of the face or whatever, and then, after I've frozen the cake for a bit to be sure the roosting is stiff enough to not pull off, I use my angled spatula to smooth the colored frosting inside the window. Then I peel the paper away and do my piping around it. Everything else is done directly onto the cake.

Too adorable for words.  Do you do this as a buttercream transfer or do you pipe straight on to the cake?
