Thanks everyone...I really needed an excuse to try out the shelf liner. Tracy, don't they sell a drawer/shelf liner in England that is textured so that it is a non slip type of liner? That is what June was talking about with her booties cake. I rolled the fondant out on the back side of an extra piece I had up in my utility closet, and it came out looking just like it was knitted or crocheted. Coolest thing ever!! Unfortunately, this picture is blurry and you can't see the texture very well.

Thank you June for this great idea, wherever you are today!! lol

By the way Tami, did you use shortening on your hands to help model the gum paste. I find that it gives a lovely finish to the work and helps to keep the paste pliable - it can dry out so quickly otherwise. Tx

So cute Linda - really adorable little guy. I love the rosie cheeks too - looks so babyish. The blanket has worked well and does look like a knitted blanket. I'm not familiar with the shelf liner used for it. Tx

Awww...thank you Nadia. I am just starting on a bunch of baby safari animals for a baby shower cake in two weeks. He is the first one I have made, and I wanted to try out that technique that June posted using rubber shelf liner to roll the fondant out on to create a crocheted looking blanket. This is not a good picture. My camera wasn't working well, so when I take pics of the other animals, I'll retake one of this guy too. The shelf liner works awesome!

Hi Tami, I was just getting ready to delete this picture since I posted one that was cropped and larger.

I had a horrible experience with gum paste when I first started working with it too. But now I love it. This guy is actually made from fondant, though.

Keep at it with the gum paste. I think as you become familiar with the texture and how it works, you will like it.

What is he made of? I used gumpaste for the first time this weekend and made elmo.. but it was not a good experience. He turned out ok but I did not like using gum paste.
