I was wary as well. Went and found some plastic stencils on my first painted cake that matched what I was trying to accomplish. When the fondant was really dry on the cake, I held up the stencil and used a food pen to lightly trace the inside of the stencil, then I just painted it in. I free handed the additional decorations I needed. Once I felt more confident in my painting abilities I didn't have to trace anymore. I still buy stencils that I think look interesting and keep them on hand for inspiration ideas when someone wants something different. Hope this answer helped.

They are fantastic painting skills, I am yet to attempt this on a cake although good at painting in general. Any tips?
