Gumpaste Flower Contest - ineligible - flowers are fondant

I love the look of buttercream stenciling. I'm still learning the technique. Thanks for looking. The flowers and leaves are all fondant.

Thank you so much for explaining the procedure to me. I am definitely going to try this the first opportunity I get. I guess I need to get a stencil first though..lol.

Thanks so much for asking. This is a buttercream frosted cake with butter cream frosting used to stencil. Yes, I let the cake crust then I smooth the frosting using Viva paper towel or "Melvira Method" using the high density paint roller(works wonderfully) Then I pop the cake in the refrigerator to chill for at least 30 minutes. The stencil I used was from Designer Stencils. Check out their videos. However, I used a small angled pointed spatula and put a thin layer of butter cream frosting to cover the stencil. Make sure the frosting is thinned down a bit for this technique to work. Don't make it runny. Once the entire pattern on the stenciled is covered, take the spatula and again take a little more of the BC off. It is just like spreading frosting on the cake making it smooth. Then from one end, slowely lift the stencil toward you off the cake and there you have it, your design. Always wash the stencil off with each application of a stencil. The 14" cake had 4 stencils, I washed the stencil each time before applying each one. I hope this all makes sense.

How do you stencil on buttercream? Do you just wait for it to crust? And do you use royal icing or buttercream for the stenciling. I have never done stenciling but am interested in learning. The cakes look great by the way!!!
