Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Made this cake for my grandson Hudson's 2nd birthday. He loves, loves, loves trains. Every time he visits, he says "train show please grandma". His favorite train tho isn't Thomas...his favorite is James the red Engine, because he loves the colour red.  Every time James appears, Hudson asks to rewind and watch over & over to see him!! And....Hudson's middle name is ...what else..."James". Hudson was sooo excited when he saw the cake..he kept saying..train cake Mommy, train cake!! Warmed my heart. ❤
Top tier is 3 cake layers, 2 chocolate mud and orange pound cake in the middle. Iced in orange buttercream. Covered in orange flavored blue fondant. James the train is made from gumpaste, clouds are homemade marshmallow fondant. Hudson letters are made from red modeling chocolate.  Bottom is a cake dummy with a brick wall, train tracks climbing up the cake with train tracks on cobblestones and little black trains made from a mold. The number 2 is gumpaste.
This was a labour of love.
ps: that is my handsome son-in-law with Hudson on his lap..

I guess I am just like the kids because I don't see anything wrong with this cake.  It is completely adorable, as is Hudson (and your son-in-law :o)

So true - and did the kids notice?  Nope.

Thanks Katy...I found the eyes the hardest. Wanted expression without him looking bugged eyed. I would do the eyes differently next time. Putting the white underneath cut out holes, more inset. But all in all...I was happy. At some point, you have to step back and be satisfied with your efforts.
Like you fretted over your station master, Mr.Topem. He was so cute and well done, but you saw flaws. We're always are own worst critics!!

Agreed June - fun though!  I meant to also say you did a great job on modelling James' face.  I actually found that the hardest part of Thomas.

Thanks Katy. Yes, as you do well know, a lot of work. Wasn't hard as it was time consuming. Doing everything in stages...the board, molding the little trains to dry, cutting out all James's parts...etc, etc. Good thing we're retired. I just couldn't imagine doing all these elements around working full time!!!
