Can anyone please advise what you use to paint faces on fondant/gum paste mix models? As you can see, my gel color mixed with alcohol is just a mess. Also, what is the best medium for modeling? I am using an approximate 50/50 mixture of homemade MMF and Nicholas Lodge's gum paste. It is working pretty well, but I cannot get it nice and smooth like everyone else seems to be able to do. Thanks for any advise :o)

Thank you, Katy.  Yes, I was trying to paint immediately after modeling.  I should have know better, but I'll wait for it to dry from now own.  I even think it resembles Ringo...so afraid I can't do it again and do it right - lol.

Firstly Sandra. Looks like absolutely like Ringo. Secondly, I agree with Katy, your paste looks too dry. I knead mine till smooth and elastic before I start. Ihave 2 recipes you might be interested in. I prefer both over Nic Lodge recipe.
1. A cornstarch based gumpaste, it doesn't have to "cure", you can use it right away.
2. Mexican paste recipe from Global Sugar Arts. You do have to keep this one frozen if not using up all at once. But it thaws out quick.

This picture shows up better than it does on FB Sandra and firstly let me say how obvious it is that it's Ringo!  From this, is does look to me like your trying to paint on still soft paste, that could be the issue.  Rubbish though I am at modelling, I find either modelling chocolate or flower paste works best for me.

And btw the shape of his mouth is amazing!
