Comment by Sandra Smiley on July 16, 2014 at 8:57pm: After having my first attempt at purple (gum paste this time) turn russet, I went on line and found the advise to add baking soda, as June suggested and does. I did try adding the baking soda and the purple flowers on my red hat cake are the result. I still have some of the flowers (about 3 months old now) and they are still purple, so the baking soda worked nicely.

Although I no longer grow them, at one time I had 600 bushes - about 300 miniatures and 300 mixed hybrid teas, grandifloras, old garden roses, etc. I was a national exhibitor and a judge and consulting rosarian for the American Rose Society for years. It was a blast, but I am too old to work that hard any more.

Actually, purple roses are among the most fragrant and most smell like old garden roses, the wonderful smell always associated with roses :o) It would be funny for them to smell like grapes, wouldn't it! LOL!

Comment by Sandra Smiley on July 8, 2014 at 8:04am: I used purple gel color, which was beautiful when blended. The next day it had started to fade and ended up an almost russet brown color. Made me sick. I dusted the petals heavily with petal dust, which only helped a little, then tried to cover it some more with pearl dust. As I said, the end results is not horrible, but it's certainly not what I wanted. I tried making purple adding a small amount of baking soda to the gum paste, which did stabilize the color, but changed the texture of the gum paste. Can't wait to use Bonnie's Kool Aid trick!
