Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Graduation cake for my great-nephew. Not exactly my neatest work but it is what it is. Bottom is chocolate cake with peanut butter filing with a mix of dark and milk chocolate ganache. Top is vanilla cake with raspberry reduction and passion fruit SMBC.

Thanks Sandra.  Wanted something a little different than thought about the graduation gown with the zipper and this design popped into my head.

Goreti, I think the tassels add a lot to the rope border, very nice and they echo the hat.  I love the soccer balls, too, but to me the coolest part is how you made the robe's zipper.  So original.

I think I understand Katy. I do pretty much the same, also using the palms of my hands. I roll the fondant back and forth away and towards me, as you say Katy, slowly stretching, making it longer until desired thinness/thickness is reached. Never thought of using the fondant smoother to even out tho. Good tip. Duly noted....

Oh I'm sure Goreti!  Getting it real thing is a pain indeed!

Yes Katy, that is how I ended up doing the ones for the rope border.  It makes it pretty even but the really thin one for the tassels are a pain.  So much easier with an extruder.

Don't know if you know this trick Goreti and June.  I don't have an extruder either, so when I want to do long strings, I start to roll in and out and stretch it with my palms and fingers.  Then to even it out, I get a fondant smoother and roll that backwards and forwards over the strip.  Works really well and gives an even depth and nice and round.  Don' t know if that makes sense?
