Oh I definitely won't beat you to it. I'm heading out to my daughters in Halifax for a week, maybe two, to help with my new grandson. When I come back, have to work on a cake for my sons 30th surprise party.....

Since the veg glycerin is apparently food safe, and it is going into the mold, which no one will be eating( I hope!), I do not have an issue with it.  If I remember to pick up some mineral oil (reminds me of when I was an OB nurse!!) I will whip up a batch & let you know.  Unless you beat me to it!

Hi June,

That might work, but I don't have any to try it.  If you do, then let us all know, OK?  This is not rocket science! lol  So changes like this might be a good thing!  Just be sure to let me know if it works!!

I was wondering Bonnie, if you could substitute food grade mineral oil in place of glycerin in the recipe?? Wonder if it would work as well. Curious ...

Maria, I have been into baking for the past year only.  The only royal icing I have made so far was in my Wilton class.  That recipe is as follows: 3 T. Meringue Powder, 1 lb. sifted pure cane confectioners sugar, & 5-6 T.s lukewarm water.  There was no glycerine called for.

The glycerin that I use is a clear liquid. only slightly viscous, not thick.  As I told June, on the side of the bottle, under suggested uses, it says: 'The vegetable glycerine contained in this product is considered food grade.'

I consider it safe to use in making the molds.  Everyone will have to make their own determinations on this issue, and weather or not to use it in actual food preparations.  Again. I am guilty of assuming that the ''The vegetable glycerine contained in this product is considered food grade.' statement on the bottle was stating that it was food grade & therefore safe to use in food prep of all kinds.  Therefore I just wanted to let everyone know that is was on sale just now.  That is all I know to tell you just now, but if you find out different, PLEASE let me know.  Thanks, Bonnie.

Hi Bonnie! You use this glycerine for making molds? Is it different from the liquid glycerine being use in royal icing? I am just not sure if we have it here.

FYI - Food grade vegetable glycerin is on sale right now. 16oz. for $6.92, or 1 gal. for $47.98 if you use a lot of it, both with free shipping.  This is cheaper than my local store for the same brand.  And beats the pants off craft store prices!

Hi June, I use NOW solutions, on the front of the bottle it says 'vegetable glycerine, 100% pure, versatile skin care.  On the side under suggested uses it says: 'The vegetable glycerine contained in this product is considered food grade.'  I got it at our local little combo health shop/pharmacy.  When I went in & told them what I needed, this was what they directed me to.    I am still on my first 16oz. bottle, can't remember what I paid for it, but do not think it was extravagant, or I would not have purchased it.  I keep remelting & reusing the same mix over & over again.  I only keep the molds I know I will be using again.  Probably have only made 4 batches total so far.  I apparently have enough glycerine left for one more batch.  I will definitely be getting some more of this stuff!  Hope this helps.
