Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

These were made for my client to take to Turkey. Her best friend is getting married next tuesday and she wanted me to make her wedding cake. advised her to get the hotel to make the cake and I'd provide the decorations (I was worried about a major cake disaster flying with cake from London to Turkey). This is the finished cascade. I made each flower on a cocktail stick and provided detailed instruction of which flower should be placed where on the hotel cake (12" & 8") which will be buttercream. I wish her all the luck with her debut in decorating :) x

Hi Maria Cristina,
I was just about to forward you this picture & the next one (the hotel cake with my flowers added). Thank you so much for your lovely comment - it means so much when wonderful cake artists think I've done something beautiful.

I've just posted pictures of what the hotel in Turkey did with these flowers.....my client was pleased - although they opted for fondant covered cake rather than buttercream (not sure why). Hope you like it. Txxx

Thank you Karen. I know they made it to Turkey in one piece. Just got to hope they don't have an accident whilst decorating it out there. :) x

Thank you to everyone for your wonderful comments. It's very high praise indeed being that you are all so accomplished at what you do with sugar. Wow!

The roses were very fragile and I was having kittens, pushing the cocktail sticks into the styrofoam. I was so worried they would crack and fall off the sticks.

June, it would have been fantastic for them to have had some kind of 'bounce factor' as I know they would have smashed to pieces if they had dropped. Was the pliable clay sugar based? Would love to know.

Emi, I went to a shop over here called Clas Olsen and bought a pack of 2 lidded storage boxes. Made from very sturdy cardboard, they were better than any shipping boxes I could find & looked nicer. It also had to be the right size to be carried on board as hand luggage. It was perfect 35x25x15cm. Each flower was first wrapped in 2 sheets of kirchen paper towel, then half a sheet of tissue wrapping paper. I had to colour code each of the flowers, as I gave a colour key chart on a photograph for my client to recreate the placement. As well as putting a dot of food colour on the base of each flower, I also put the colour on the individual packing so it would hopefully be easier to follow. The buttterflies I packed in rigid cupcake case containers - layered with tissue and the leaves were packed in the same way. I told my client to use artistic licence on where they should go.

Once I'd finished them I kicked back in my chair and opened a bottle of tonic water. If it had been a bottle of champagne and I'd shaken it first it couldn't have sprayed any further or more dramatically! I drenched all my leaves (which were ruined and had to be done again). The flowers had a few dots on them oncce dried, which is why I brushed them with the luster dusts. A happy accident in the end as I really liked the way the pearl and gold bought them to life. I then nearly splattered the whole lot with blue colouring as I was colour coding them - I really was a butter fingers with these and was glad to be rid of them in the end. They were fated to be destroyed by the hand that created them lol.

Anyway, they are safe after their 1740 mile flight to Turkey - thats the main thing. I'll post pictures of what she does with them.

Thanks again everyone. Love, Tracy xx
