Fondant Fetish - Handpainted Sugar Butterflies

I've made the first batch of butterflies to adorn a 3 tier Heart shaped wedding cake. It's due to be finished and delivered on thursday, so watch this space.

Anne, they are made from flower paste (gum paste). I used a dilute of gin & a hint of baby blue paste colour and brushed it on leaving patches of white. I then used a slightly thicker mix (still very thin but darker) of the same colour and added this to the wings as well, leaving patches of lighter blue and white. I then added my detail with the black paste mixed with a little gin and used a fine pain brush. Finally once dry I used edible varnish which just leaves a sheen. I've not shown it on these but I've now added a very fine touch of clear glitter to the edge of the wings to subtly catch the light.
I've taken step by step photos of this while process and could post if you are interested.

Tracy, are these made with fondant, if so how did you get the translucent look to them?

Ha - just burst out laughing, Tracy.  This is exactly what I just said to June about my wine bottle cake.  Everyone keeps saying they can't wait to see it and I said it will be the anti climax of the year!

Thanks Tammy, I've made 53 of these....and three large ones.
Wanted to make sure there are enough to give the cake some movement. It's in my mind......now just to translate it onto the cake :) x
