The flames on this cake are made from poured and pulled hard sugar. The blunt end is just stuck into the fondant around the base of the arm. I don't know why you couldn't make it work the way you are suggesting. It doesn't seem like you would need the lump of fondant unless you want it raised up a little higher than the surface of the cake. I would just make the strips separately and attach them some way. good luck with the cake and post a picture so we can all see how wonderful it turns out!

Hi Dena..
I have to ask you if you dont mind how do you make the fondant in the middle of the cake look like it is busted up..like the flames in the middle of this cake..I am going to be making a mickey mouse cake and I would love to make mickey's head burst threw the cake similiar to your hand...do you make a little mound of fonadnt on top of the smooth fondant and then cut it into strips for the figure in the center??
