I used a small amount of buttercream with Super Gold luster mixed in until it looked gold...then I thinned this thick paste with vodka until it was spreadable. I thinned the mixture much more to paint the cross on the top. The vodka evaporates out and leaves the buttercream/luster mixture almost as hard and dry as royal icing would be. I don't know if you could do the same with royal icing instead of buttercream. I seldom make royal and have it on hand so I just use buttercream. It looks more like it's flocked than painted gold...has a soft velvet look to it especially when using super pearl.
