Denise, I think it is the effect that counts, and this looks just really good.  Linda, whenever I go shopping I look for what will be good on cakes.

You know it! I have used 'props' for cakes for years. It's just been in the last few years with the different cake TV shows and all the hupla about making everything edible that I think people expect everything to be made from sugar. I say whatever the customer wants and whatever works. And if you can get it on sale to boot-so much the better! lol It is an awesome cake and I love it. =O)

Linda: Thank you for the compliment.  I did not make the lighthouse, or the fencing.  I bought the Lighthouse at Michael's and the fencing at Pat Catan's.  The rocks around the base of the lighthouse are chocolate rocks, which I ended up finding at WalMart a while back.  However, all the shells, and lifesavers I did make, and they were all made out of gumpaste.  The sand is crushed graham crackers.  I know where other people have used brown sugar, but I think that would be way too sweet, especially for the amount I had to use.

I started making a lighthouse, but just couldn't get it to the way I wanted it, and Michael's had this lighthouse 50% off, so it was a not brainer, and saved me a ton of time, and headache, if you know what I mean.

I'm a sucker for nautical themed cakes and this is just sooo cool! I hope you will add details on how you made this lighthouse and all of the 'trimmings'.
