This is my first attempt at painting with cocoa in melted vegetable shortening. The top pic is the photo that was given to me to paint a general idea of the house on the cake.

I made some practice plaques from pastillage and practiced and fiddled - where I discovered that you need a really thin brush.

This plaque was my very first attempt at painting with cocoa. The image is one I found on Deviant art when I was googling cocoa painting.

Hi Linda,
cocoa painting is done by mixing cocoa powder with cocoa butter (although I couldn't get my hands on cocoa butter so I used melted copha - a white shortening in Australia that is solid at room temperature). Basically you melt a little cocoa butter and mix different amounts of cocoa powder into it to get different shades. You can also use some melted chocolate to do the darker lines. I did my painting freehand, but you can use transfer paper (assuming you're not going to eat the decoration) or use a stylus to prick or scratch your design onto your surface.
There is a great video tutorial on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Pw1D0uXEVw
Make sure you have REALLY fine brushes or your lines will look clumsy and unprofessional. I used a 10 X 0 brush and one that I cut down to a few long bristles. Hope this helped. : )
