Well, the Scarlet Macaws Cake made it to the fair without any problems. Mike carried the birds separately and I added them on site.

Thank you, Bonnie and Janine.  No, Bonnie, the birds are melted, too.  I do not believe there will be anything salvageable.  I may not even be able to use the cake dummies again.  As unlikely as it sounds, Bonnie, I may well recreate this design, since it was successful, for a show in Memphis in January.  It fits the theme and I should be able to do it better next time....right?  I am not really heartbroken, Janine, just a little sad to see it in such a shape.  It was especially sad because the kind people were trying their best to take good care of it and that is exactly what condemned it to death.

So extremely sorry to read about your loss :( you must be heartbroken.

Oh Sweetheart, I am sooo very sorry.  But the birds are safe?  You brought them home with you?  I hope so.  Boo hoo hoo.  It is a good thing you are able to replace as needed, sounds like this one will need a lot of replacement if you decide to recreate it all.   Here's hoping you will some day.  It is forever beautiful in my mind.

Well, ladies, I went by the fair today to see how the cake was holding up and it is no more.  The folks manning the department were trying to take good care of it and have been putting it in the refrigerator every night and taking it out and putting it on display during the day.  Everything except the bodies of the macaws and the pods of the birds of paradise, both which are made of modeling chocolate, has completely melted.  The fondant covering the cake looks like it has paint pored all over it, but it is the melted flowers and foliage.  There are just a bunch of bare wires sticking up.  Even the little lizard on the back side, who is solid gum paste, has melted into a puddle.  I expected some damage, but I thought I would be able to salvage most of it.  Instead, I may not even be able to use the cake dummies!  Total loss.  At least I have pictures :o)  I wanted to learn from this experience and today I learned a really valuable lesson....be sure to tell the folks at the fair NOT to refrigerate gum paste!

LOL - THANKS, Denise!  I learned about a million things making this one and it took a long time (almost 3 months - not non-stop, of course), but it was a lot of fun.

Thank you so much, Janine and Maria!  Actually, Maria, it is a cake dummy - LOL!  So you are technically correct, it is not a cake!  All of the decorations, of course, are real fondant, modeling chocolate or gum paste.  It will be on display for 9 days so real cake was not practical.  You have seen the bits and pieces as I got them made.  This is just everything put together :o)

Thanks to all of you for your constant support throughout the whole process.  Next time I won't be so nervous.
