Butterfly Museum Cake
Cake made for an employee of the local butterfly museum. Butterflies made of gum paste. Cake was covered in fondant and decorated with fondant vines, gum paste flowers, and butterflies.

The butterflies are gum paste so, yes, you can make them well in advance! If I make them ahead of time, I store them in a container (not airtight though) to keep the dust off and the light out.

I love your butterflies. Can I make and keep them for a long time? Will the colors fade?
