Thank you so much Joan! It's called a petal technique - I found it on mycakeschool.com - the lady there does a great tutorial on how its done. You just use a round tip and a small angled spatula - pipe a bead and swipe with the spatula :). It's cream cheese icing on this cake - no special trick for the shine - I think it was just how it was photographed because it didn't have that shine in real life :)

I love the way the buttercream is applied - how did you accomplish this? What makes the cake appear so "shiny"?l
