Thanks so much for that Phil!  I'm definitely going to add this to my list of things to try....

Katy, I make my own, it is MUCH more inexpensive.

I use Almond Bark off of the grocery shelf (do not try to use the ones that call themselves 'candy coating chocolate'  it does not work when you stir in the corn syrup!  I use the brown for things like above and the white can be colored to anything you want.  (you can also color the brown to make black or dark colors like burgundy and dark purple.)

For a small single batch you take 10oz of chocolate (1/2 pack in most brands)  cut the pieces into 2 and place all in bowl.  Microwave in 60 second intervals until completely melted and smooth - stirring with a spatula each time.

This is where you would add any coloring desired.  (OIL coloring only)

Now add 2/3cup of Light Corn Syrup into the chocolate and stir with spatula.

stir until it starts to ball up around the spatula (You will know)

unroll a generous piece of saran wrap.  Spatula mixture onto the wrap in a long shape (like a rectangular log)  pull wrap around all the side of chocolate and place in frige until solid (this can take a couple hours.

It's ready to use.

pull off the amount you want to sculpt with and knead it in your hands until it's soft like play dough.

Sculpt away!!

Tip:  it gets sticky quickly (worse in humid temps)  so when you are having trouble with it keeping shape or sculpting in details, just pop it in the fridge or even the freeze for a few minutes to reset.

If you want to cover things like I did the tree above you roll it out on your flat surface just like you would fondant.

Hope you give it a try!!

:)

Phil, do you make your own modelling chocolate or buy it ready made?

Thanks Luz and @katy don't be scared, It's just like any cake product...the more you work with something you learn the tricks and what works best for you.  I love the versatility and also the ability to mold and shape modeling chocolate and have it retain it's shape.  Give it a try...you may surprise yourself!

For some reason, I'm scared to try.  Way out of my comfort zone!
