my guess would be a small single layer cake on a cake/foam board covered in fondant? the scewer will hold the cake board in place just by poking only halfway through it

I have seen this done without being styrofoam, do u know how this is done

I'm a beginner also =] it's just two square cakes, the "lid" on the top is styro foam. the animals, tissue, bow and tree are all gumpaste, the tree is a wooden dowel covered in strips of gumpaste =] not sure if this helps at all =]
