July is time for the Silverstone Formula One Grand Prix in the UK - even if qualifying day was flooded out. That's the British Summer for you! Car is sculpted from madeira cake with apricot conserve filling, covered in red fondant and then painted red again to give a bit more shine. Wheels and crash barriers are chocolate cake filled with caramel butter cream. Wheels were made by cutting rounds of cake with a pastry cutter and covered in black fondant. Front and rear spoilers were hand cut from gumpaste. Wheel hubs and lettering hand painted. Logos hand painted directly onto the car except for the Ferrari badge on the side, which I hand painted separately then stuck on. Track is black fondant, grass is lemon butter cream piped with grass tip. Kerbstones made from white and red fondant. Gold candles to give the effect of a fence.

Thank you sunnycake and thanks to your husband too.  I'm a bit of an F1 fan too, so wanted to make it as real as possible.  I did have to admit defeat on some of the finer details though.....

Thanks June.  I owe Martin big time for setting me on track as to how to go about this.

Ooooo  I missed this one. Just amazing Katy. Great job. I have never attempted to do a carved cake, so I am in awe.  UK is getting rain...we on the otherhand are getting heat, heat, heat.

lol - thanks very much Tracy.  This weather is the pits isn't it?  At least I didn't resent being indoors caking and not out in the sunshine!  It did indeed go down well last night.  Boys were arguing over who got the wheels and when I went to cut the 'crash barriers' in half I got told off - 'I want a whole barrier' was the cry.

Katy, it's fabulous. Didn't the fondant get a bit sticky with all that rain though!!!! Lol - when are we going to get summer?
Seriously great cake - bet it went down well (in more ways than one). Tracy xxxx
