This year's Christmas cake. Les Brown's wonderful rich fruit cake, covered in marzipan and white fondant. Decorated with hand made sugar poinsettias, Christmas rose, pine cone spray, robins, holly, ribbons and plaque. The sides have a layer of fondant to represent hills with Christmas trees and stars. Stars and hills dusted with rainbow lustre dust for a little twinkle.

Thank you so much Linda - it was kind of the effect I was going for!

Oh, Katy! This looks like a vintage Christmas card! It's just gorgeous! I love your script! It looks so Victorian. Everything about this cake is just beautiful.

Yup Katy
We can get carried away. Especially me. When you don't make that many cakes, you want to make every element you can to put on the cake. Plus, it is nice to kinda "show off".... we all have our pride... hee hee. Steve always says.... And says... simple is best. Says simple looks classic.

I couldn't agree with you more June.  Yes, I know the vain part of me wants to 'show off', but my main objective when making a cake is for it to be relevant to the recipient and something that will make them happy.  And something you want to come back for another slice of!

Ah Katy
How clever!! I agree with Mick. It seems sometimes, not always, but since caking has taken off, that it is who can out do who? I see some cakes for children, & honestly Katy, if I had possessed the skill I have now back when they were small, I still wouldn't have made them a grand 3/4..+ + tier over the top cake. They certainly wouldn't have cared less, so obviously it would been to "impress" others. It is like those lavish new teen 16 yr old, or even 13 yr old "coming out" parties. I think it is nuts! Now it is cultural..... sometimes. Depends on if you give into the "In laws"!!! I went through some of this with my Polish Mama law. I had a friend, now passed, poor thing, who had to "go big, or go home". That came straight from her Mama law. Her hubby never spoke up. Thank goodness Steve did, or we would have had probably 50-60 + at my kiddie parties. Every Polish kid from a 50 km radius. Hee Hee!!

Thank you so much you guys.  Even Mick is impressed with this one!  He likes traditional and often says us cakers have lost the plot with some of the things we come up with.  But he says this is the best thing I've ever done (wow praise indeed).  The pine cone was so easy June.  An oval of modelling paste and then I went around it with the tool (I don't know what it's called), that you would use for marking a mouth, say, on a figurine.  Pushed the tool in very firmly and then pulled it back very slightly to separate the sections.  The leaves were a long shape of wired modelling paste, coloured with forest green and then cut with tiny scissors.  Cone was dusted in 'nut brown'. :)

Wow!  I'm in love with that pine cone & branches.  Awesome job Katy.  It's a shame to cut it.
