I appreciate that Tracy.  I actually lived in the UK for awhile and was trying to figure out how to do the Union Jack... but its out of my ability.

Just wanted to say - this cake looks incredible. That is so effective. I'm from the UK and the Union flag would be impossible to achieve , I've never seen this done before, just perfection.

I did figure it out on my own, but I wasn't sure it would work until the very end!

Thank you very much for the step-by-step directions. They're very easy to follow. I've seen several photos of flag layer cakes, but yours is by far the best. Did you figure out the construction yourself? If so, I'm very impressed. I'm definitely going to make this cake for Labor Day!

Thank you!  I saw a picture of something similar, but not quite the same, that gave me the idea.  There are thin layers of icing between the cake layers that help hold it all together.  It was like fitting puzzle pieces together... really fun!  (I have a tutorial of how I did it up on my cake blog if anyone is interested in the details) http://sugarturntable.com/?p=221

I love this cake! I also like the fact that it is 'real' cake and not just a dummy cake. Are the white stripes cake or very thick icing? No matter what, it makes my mouth water just looking at it. Awesome job!!

That is such a neat idea! One I'm definitely gonna have to copy :) I love to make the inside of my cakes look neat as well as the outside.  I thought tie-dye was really cool looking on the inside of a cake, but this tops it! I'm impressed. Did you make this up or see it somewhere? Either way i love it!
