First I carved the basic shape of the waves into the cake, then using "spakle" (buttercream and crumbs), I built up the top of each wave. Let the whole thing chill, covered it with fondant, then hand painted the various blues with a mixture of luster and petal dust. Final touches with white royal icing literally gobbed onto the edges of each wave to make sea foam! Once that dried a bit I hit it with a little more teal luster dust for a little more sparkle on the foam and a little streaking of white candy color in the waves for some depth. Great fun right!?
