I made the wheels out of fondant about a week ahead and allowed them to dry good before putting them on the cake.  I just used a small round cutter to make them.  And poked the holes to make them look like they had wheels attached to the tires.  This was a fun cake I made it for my little brother for his birthday.

Hi Jeri,

 

I really like your car cake, it's given me inspiration for one I'm  making for a friends 60th he wants a police car.  It'll be my first carved and first car cake!! ohh exciting.  Just out of interest, what are the wheels made out of?
