Hi Shawna,
I put the fondant on, then I had a template I'd made that I used to mark off exactly where I wanted the nubs to be before I stuck them on (I also used a template for the board).
One of the main things I'd do differently would be to trim the cakes more to allow for the fondant - it didn't fit neatly between the nubs on the board because I didn't realise how much room the fondant would take up. I'd also pipe 'LEGO' onto the nubs, which I'd intended to do with this one but ran out of time! I'd think about buying pre-coloured fondant too because I had trouble getting the colours as vivid as I'd wanted.
This was one of my first cakes too (I'd been decorating about a month by then) so mostly it would just be doing the same as before but a little better - I hope!
Good luck with your cake, I'll look out for the pictures! If there's anything else you want to know, just ask. :o)

Out of curiosity, what would you do different next time with your added experience? Did you put the fondant on first then add the lego nubs or did you add them and then put the fondant on the cake? This is exactly what I had in mind for my son's bday later this month. Can you please give me any pointers/tips, I am new to cake decorating. This will only be my second cake for a party. Any help would be appreciated. I LOVED your cake! Great job!

Thank you Deb! For each cake I cut out the sides individually and stuck them on, then put the cake upside down on the rolled out fondant and cut around it for the top, then used a smoother over it.

Love this cake! How did you get the corners so sharp?

I hope so, I'm doing a Tardis for one of my stepsons next month and I was thinking of doing it like this - tho it's still at the planning stage yet.

Your experience making this cake will stand you in good stead not just for another lego cake ........I would imagine any cake with a "block" element to it.

Thank you Theresa and Tanya :o)

Very challenging! It was one of the first few cakes I did and the first I completely designed myself from scratch so I'm very proud of it - tho I do keep looking at the pictures and wishing I knew a child the right age so I could have another go at it with the added experience I have now!
