Thank you so much Monica!! I have a few minutes today to myself and I am going to do just that. You have some pretty amazing beautiful cakes I just love them!
Have you tried any of the Wilton books? I was doing a search and there are so many books out there I was wondering which one do you like best? Oh your cakes are just amazing love them! Thank you for everything
This is definitely very helpful. Thank you for taking time to write to me. Now.... I hope I can find tylose here. I have never heard of it.... does it have a substitute - just in case? You also helped me understand what Pastillege is, I came across it yesterday and couldn't figure it out. Its like you knew! :-)
Thanks Monica. for the help. Am actually not in the United States, but I will check it up online and here. I live in Kenya, East Africa :-)
I really admire you! how long have you been doing cake decorating? I am just beginning, I want to see if I can become good enough to open it up as a business. Right now there are no elaborate cake decorators in my country.
Monica, this is very inspiring, I like the fact that you learnt all by yourself, it means I have a chance to get good! Just yesterday, my family (mum and sisters) discouraged me from the whole idea of a bakery. In Kenya, people value employment more than the arts. Which is really hard, because I hate my job at the moment. I love baking and I would really like to take it to the next level. I looked at yummy arts and I will try and join as soon as I can. I first want to buy the Wilton course books and the equipment. But will definitely put it on my budget. Thanks for your help, you are so kind.
Thanks for that. There are bakeries in Kenya, they are just not that skilled in cake decorating. They do basic frosting and basic designs. The things I have seen done by you and the others on this forum are not done here. And you are right.... it is a gold mine. I will definitely take your advice. I plan on ordering wilton books at the end of this month with my pay check :-) but till then I will start working on taste! different cake recipes.
thanks for the friend request! Thanks for the information earlier on making diamonds too (not neccessarily because of diamonds - I want to try to make butterflies) but I've been trying for a while! I didn't even know where to begin, and now I have somewhere! What a fabulous sit ethis is!
thanks so much! That information is really valuable to me! I can't wait to try it. I just have a beautiful cake in mind and I need glass-looking butterflies to do it. I really really appreciate your help.
I had time to read the instructions today. I think I am going to try to make a couple of butterflies this afternoon. I will post pictures if it works for me. I'm pretty excited. I really have to get a cake going so someone needs to have a birthday soon!
Well, I tried the gelatin from the instructions you suggested and I am pleased to report that (although it may not appear so) it turned out PERFECT! I now know what I am going to do now that I have the means to make butterflies how I want to make them. I must say, it seems like this method will make absolutely beautiful jewels if I ever need them as well.
I had to shape the wire myself, which was very tedious and difficult for me to do. I wish they had a pre-arranged wire to dip. But good enough I guess. You can tell it's a butterfly. Here is a picture of the petal as well so you can see how nice of a jewel it would make. I am so happy about getting this information, thanks!
Ya, I here you. I was pretty wiped out for a couple if days. My daughter's 4th A us coming up end of this mnth. I didn't do as much for the wedding as I would have liked as Sam is a control freak. Can't point a finger, cause she got it from me. I am also too much of a perfectionist, & sometimes that's good & bad. Kinda puts stress on doing a cake cause there really isn't a "perfect" cake. I don't do too many paying customers, mostly family events. Now that I am recently retired, I have more time, and since my friends & family know I do this, perhaps I may get business from word if mouth. A very dear friend who passed young from breast cancer got me started in caking years ago. She said, June, if you really, really, want to enjoy decorating, and avoid the stress, DON'T go into business. She did for about 10 yrs. & got fed up with the difficult clients. She went into homecare like me, & enjoyed doing her cakes on the side. I miss her, she was a sweetheart.
I have see your work/photos Monica, and you are no slouch. You make a quality product. Sometimes friends & family are the worst. Since it is a "hobby"......how hard can it be. I had a laugh about 6 mnths ago as my sis-in-law ( no it all, sorry, byt she is ), thought she could make fondant, roll it out make F roses for her grandaughters B-day cake. Well I have to say, she ate crow. Not like her to admit defeat, but she said she had no idea the talent, finesse & time it took. It looked so easy. So, I must say, that was a feather in my cap. Just wish I had her on "video". Ha! Ha!
I will ck it out. Funny, my family gave me a surprise 60th/retirement party this past Saturday. ( I'm a Canada day baby ). Had a inkling, and when we got to the restaurant, I knew. They headed me towards the banquet room. I thought in my head, I won't have a birthday cake, cause I'm the only one who does them in my family..Ha! Ha! My daughter did make lovey & tasty cupcakes though. My son gave me a cool teflon coated cupcake holder, small one to use for a simple presentation. I'm so glad they didn't get me a Costco cake....yuk
