Hi Betty,

Do you have a theme that you would like to go with for your brother's 65th? are you talking stacked or just one level? There are so many choices out there between fondant/gumpast/BC to work with these days that the ideas can be endless :) which of course is exactly why I love to decorate a cakes :)

You may want to take the Decorating basics class at one of the Joann's, Hobby Loby or Michaels in your area. You will get a hands on experience with Butter cream.

Yes, I will check out the classes, right now I will just make a basic cake and decorate the best I can, no theme, nothing fancy, just edging, lettering and something simple and nice. I will take it little by little.

Betty B,
Since you are hoping to do the cake in just over a week I'm not sure you will be able to get the classes in time. You might want to check out Youtube..there are tons of on-line tutorals out there that are awsome...good luck and just have fun with your project. The more you do easier it gets :) we would love to see the ends results.

What mixer, KitchenAid or other.
Kitchenaid mixer for cookes/cakes and maybe bread? I am looking at a KitchenAid Mixer, looking at the 5 quart plus, I see the 6 quart also, both made of metal gears inside, I see the 5 quart and below are plastic. I want to invest for making cookies for others, my old General Electric won't last much longer (honestly over 50 years old)

I have both the 6 qt and the 5 quart. and I use both alot. I use the 6 qt for thicker batters and dough. I use the 5 qt more for the icings. I started off with the 6 qt and then I found the 5 qt at a garage sale for $40. (pink one) used once!! I almost tripped running up to pay for it because I was so excited!! LOL!

Miracles happen! I just received a gift card for $170.00 for something I did this past summer for Best Buy, they have a Kitchenaid 500 on sale, so I would still have to pay about $100.00. WoW! I can't believe it! Now should I get white or the silver metallic...decisions. decisions. any input of color? I just wonder if the metallic is easier to clean than white.

Birthday cake update. My dear brother is going to Floriday for a week, so I have an extra week to figure what to make for his 65th Birthday Cake. Newbie, Betty
