I have always baked for my family and when my son opened a restaurant Hawkeyes' Grill & Pub in Brooklyn, Mi (MIS-Michigan International Speedway), I volunteered to make a few desserts for him to get things started. Well 4 years later, I am still baking a 'few' things on Monday's and Thursdays (my days off) for him and have people asking me to bake for their special days. The more I do the better I get and would love to devote more time but need to work my other job full time. I'm called Mom's Alternate Endings at the restaurant because he has a movie theme throughout the menu and the original dessert was fried ice cream so I'm the 'Alternate'! Love to see the other ideas here and appreciate all of the help, frustrations, good job done and general excitement with everyone trying to make the world a little more beautiful with dessert!!

Hello fellow Michigander's!! I'm new to the cake decorating business, but am having so much fun with it!! I started out as "The Cheesecake Lady" - named that by my friends...and really got going with it! I was asked if I could do a cake, and I said "sure, why not" ... and here I am now!! I've done a lot of types of cakes, starting with my own wedding cake...then a baby shower, bridal shower, birthday cakes of all different desings...but my favorite thing to do is specialty design cakes like the Barbie doll cake, and my SpongeBob cake. They are so fun to do! I love a challenge, and try to do my best with it! I've recently been asked to do a Lego cake - which should be fun!! I have done the wedding cake for my neice, and I loved how it came out for her! I look forward to learning more from this site! Happy Caking!

Hello, it's nice to be included in a group that shares my interest in cake decorating! I started taking classes at Heinrich's 27 years ago and have primarily done cakes for family but would like to venture out and do a cake now and then and be compensated for my hard work and time. I still take classes occasionally, most recently at Sarah's. Can't ever stop learning! My favorite cakes to decorate are for religious celebratons and themed cakes for girls. I look forward to corresponding with all of you!

Welcome Ladies..I'm so glad you joined :) Erin like you my first class was through Heinrich's. Belive it or not..Mrs Heinrich herself taught me about frosting and decorating when I was about 17 (1970's) I think she was well into her 70-80's at the time) what a Great experience that was :) My next class was gum paste roses at Sarah's with Carol Lewis..sounds like we are running the same track . I love it!!

Denise, I guess it's fair to say your hooked as well..lol. it starts out a cake here..one there..and if you like doing it at all..look out it never seems to stop.lol. For me that's just fine..I Love it..and yes, I'm addicted. A co-worker of mine recently did the Lego cake it was so cool. Please post a picture

I have an upcoming wedding shower this weekend so I'll probably not be on much this week (I have full time job and do a lot of my work after hours) But I look forward to chating with each of you soon.

I don't know where alot of you are but I'm in Clark Lake (MIS) and my big Kitchenaid Pro600 series mixer croaked (again) and I put the bowl and attachments on Craigs list; bowl, beaterblade, sideswipe blade, whisk, bread dough hook and splash guard for $75 and the mixer is good for parts or if someone wants to fix the bearings in it for $80. I think my husband put it under household appliances, probably Ann Arbor listings but it says Clark Lake. I want a Bosch Universal but need to sell some cakes to buy it!! Thought someone would appreciate some extra parts with cake season coming up.

Wow Colleen,
How long have you had it? I have had mine for well over 10 years and it works like I bought it yesterday? (knock on wood..now that I've said that YIKES). I couldn't even tell you how may wedding cakes/cupcakes/shower cakes..and the true test royal icing..you get the idea that I have made over the course of ten years. I just bought the KitchenAid 600 for my son's wedding shower last summer. For what they want for these machines that pretty dis-hearting.I trust you have talked to Kitchen Aid already? what ashame....

That mixer is only 4 years old and I paid over $400 for it. I used it at the restaurant and made alot of bread too. My little 4 quart that my dad bought me in 1970 is still running strong buttttttttttt that was made by Hobart and now Kitchen Aid sold out to Kenwood and they sold out to Whirlpool and the insides are encased in plastic housing and that model has had tons of problems. On Cake Central and Rose's website alot of people have voiced thier disgust with Kitchen Aid cheaping out. I've researched Viking and Cuisinart too and Bosch seems to come out on top. All stainless steel and made in Germany.

Colleen, I have a KA at home and have used KA at work until 2 years ago when the last one died. At that time my boss was looking for another KA on sale and stumbled upon the Cuisinart. When he brought it to me I was not real happy, but it didn't take but one day working with it that I fell in love! I now want to get rid of my home KA and get the new Cuisinart. It has everything the KA home and heavy duty mixer has in-one and more. I will tell you the inner parts seem to be plastic; however it comes with a 3 year warranty. (That is what sold my boss) We are using it a home model commercially and I just love it! I have often said I should be a spokes person for the Cuisinart mixer. One of our regular customers came into the kitchen that I work and noticed the new mixer. She said her KA just died and asked what I thought of the Cuisinart. I showed her all the great features it has VS the KA, and she was sold immediately. Honestly my only gripe is the color. We use a grey one at the restaurant and I just don't like the looks of it for a home model. It's just not 'pretty'. =)
