The Local Foods to Local Markets Act passed the Senate and it is now off the the House. We should know by the end of next week if it passes and if is does the law will go into affect around August 1st. Although my feelings on this Law are that it is unfair, I do support it because I think it is a foot in the door. And after talking to Senator Gail Schwartz about my concerns, she assured me that provisions will be made to the bill next year allowing everyone to bake from home. The original draft of the bill did allow this however it faced too much opposition. This was the only way, after countless hours of negotiations, that everyone would agree on the bill. Everyone being the Governor, the State Board of Heath, and countless Senators. And so it is what it is and I feel we need to support it if we ever want a chance to use our homes for food production and selling. We have been urged to contact our local reps and voice our support of this bill. If you need the contact info just let me know.

Mande, I feel like I'm stalking you! :) We're in all the same places online. I'm curious, though, what will be different next year that the "registered growers" stipulation will be removed? If there's strong opposition now, won't there be next year, too? Or is it the thinking that if nothing terrible happens under the current law, it can then be expanded to home based baking?

I don't know the whole thing is making me mad! I have been against the fact that this bill is not open for every one and have been voicing that since the beginning. Well, Senator Schwartz did not like that because if people got on my side of things then her bill might not pass. So she called me yesterday and wanted me to swing things to show the bill in a more positive way. Her explanations was that this bill is a baby step and that's what we need to take to get our foot in the door with the whole cottage food thing.  And that next year we can work on getting some amendment to the bill that would remove the "registered growers" part and raise the net limit of $5,000. But the more I read about other states cottage food laws and the more I think about this local food law the madder I get! I don't know if I can believe a politician especially since the only one the has contacted me, after numerous emails and phone calls, is the one who wrote the stupid bill and she wants me to talked nice about it! I am tiered of all of this and am seriously think of moving out of this stupid state. If you ask me the person that thought of this bill is someone that grows medicinal marajana and they want to be able to make pot brownies and sell them! LOL! Any way if you would like Linda give me a call 970-640-0038, that's my business line. Sorry for venting!

Oh, too funny! Seriously, I don't even want a full fledged cake business...I'd just like to be able to do 5 or 6 wedding cakes a year. A commercial kitchen makes what I want to do completely out of reach.

However, 1 wedding cake COULD cost up to between $500.00- $5,000.00 to produce! Think about it! 5 a year would suffice!

Susan, that is the exact argument I  with her on the phone. $5,000 what a joke!

I am sending an email to every single representative today and if any one that would like to do the same let me know and I will get the the addresses.  I want this bill to be amended allowing everyone to benefit. I am going to play off the "Equal Rights" bit. I think they'll listen to that, I hope.
