Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I am thinking of using fondant on a cake I need to make later this month but all the fondant I have ever tasted has that sort of "no real taste" type of flavor to it.  The cake is for my soon to be 5 year old for his birthday so I need something yummy.  He loves buttercream icing but I am never happy with how smooth I get it.....so maybe I need a good tip for smoothing buttercream.....any help I can get would be greatly appreicated.

The easiest way I find to smooth out buttercream is to ice it as smooth as I can then let it crust over and use a paper towel with no designs (Like Viva) and a fondant smoother to make it smooth.  You can make your own fondant (Not the gross marshmallow one) and flavor it what ever you like.  there are tutorials on youtube and there is also recipes online.  I think Satin ice also has a buttercream flavor fondant.  There is also rolled buttercream recipes out there though I personally have not had success with it.
