Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I have been making cakes for years, but I have finally started tryin to make it into a business. Any advice how to do cakes on a somewhat regular basis w/o having it take over your house? I usually make fondant pieces ahead, so I have to find a place to put up to dry away from kids. And dont get me started about organizing tools! When I start working, seems like my tools explode all over the dining room! LOL Any advice on organizing and space management?? Thanx!

hahaha .. sounds very familiar! I got my cutters in 1 container and left-over fondant in another, an area for the tins, a drawer full of other stuff and 2 other cupboards! lol!
KIDS ARE THE REASON TO BE ORGINIZE. I WORK IN ORDER FOR MY PEACE AND CONTROL. IF I HAVE AN ORDER TO SATURDAY, I BAKE ON THURSDAY NIGHT WHEN THE KIDS ARE SLEPPING THEN I DECORATED FRIDAY NIGHT AND SATURDAY MORNING DELIVER THE CAKE. IF YOU NEED SOME PLACE KIDS SAFE USE YOUR OVEN OVERNIGHT AND EARLY IN THE MORNING PUT OVER YOUR FRIDGE ITS WARM ENOUGH TO MANTAIN YOUR FONDANT PIECES IN SHAPE. ALWAYS PUT YOUR PIECES IN WARM PLACES. FOR LAST PUT ALL YOUR PANS AND TOOLS NEAR THE OVEN OR BUY PLASTIC BOXES AND PUT LABELS WITH THE INFORMATION ABOUT ALL THE STUFFS IN THE BOX. I HOPE THIS HELP YOU.
with 3 kids, can only really do cakes at nights. and kids are off-limits in the kitchen anyway... btw, did u say u keep ur fondant somewhere warm? thats a 1st since fondant doesnt keep well in humidity and warm temp .. hmm... if anything keep in a cool dry place otherwise it'll melt :)

Yes, here in NYC as long as we are properly zoned for in home business, we can fall under the Dept of Agriculture.

The exceptions are, no pets in the house, no commercial kitchens and no selling of goods that will need refrigeration.  Once you deal with the items that need refrigeration, you're back in with the commercial guidelines.
