Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I have loved baking for years, but have just recently started decorating. Soon, I will want to make it into a business from home. How do I get started? Other than the obvious- newspaper, Craigslist and telling friends, any tips on advertising and getting new customers? Does anyone have any good advice for me?

Thanks,

Sherra,
One thing I did when I first started is to bake several 6" cakes and take them to neighbors, co-workers, stores you frequent as "samples". Leave some business cards with the cakes.

Thanks. I think I will try that. Guess I need to get some card printed first. :)

The first thing you have to do is check your local laws!  Some states allow home kitchens, but you have to be licensed, insured and inspected.  Some states will only allow use of commercial kitchens.  I did a few calls and asked some questions and the same answers I receive are, if you are baking a cake for a friend, regardless if they are paying for it or not, thats an agreement with you and your friend and not a business transaction. So its acceptable.  Now, if you advertised, and someone saw your advertisement, called you and ordered a cake, thats a business transaction, that will be what gets you in trouble.
