Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi everyone I would like you all to take a look at my cakes and tell me what I could do better. Because when I'm making my cakes I never feel fully confident in myself when I finish my product. But my husband tells me they look good. Does anyone else have that problem?

I have the same problem......I never feel confident about my work. My husband tells me the same thing, it is nice to hear but husbands can be bias :)
LOL....ONLY EVERYTIME I MAKE A CAKE!! I do have confidence in my cake flavors, but when it comes to decorating them, I also lack confidence. I actually shake until I hear the customers comments, then I feel better. Part of me wants to hold on to that confidence the costomer gives me to build from it and the other part of me wants to let it go to keep me humble. ;)
I have not made many cakes since I started a year ago, but sure am loving each one because I have learned so much from each one! By the time I am done I know exactly what I would do better next time.
Yes.. in fact i just made a Boston Red Sox cake for a person that called only two days prior to the surprise birthday party event! I wanted to to do it.. so i told her "No Problem" Then had to run across town and get everything i needed. I was very excited to make it and finally finished it just two hours before pickup. I have posted the picture on my page.. it was to feed 50 people. I was very nervious about it all the way until i heard back from the customer saying it was a huge hit! WHOO.. now i can breath and quit biting my nails.. my husband is constantly telling me to relax. that i provide a great product and quit under charging myself! LOL i am sure no one else hears that from their husband.. right???? :) always about the profit! HA. Take care

The best advise is take your time, remember its only icing, if your not happy with the end result that its not the end of the world. You can remove the things you don't like, My mother taught me how to decorate years ago, her motto was leaves are your best friend. meaning if you were working on a floral cake and still were not satisfied, run a couple of vines down the side of the cake and add leaves. It built the confidence up. and always take pictures of your work. This way you will see how well your doing and where you can improve on the next one. Happy Baking!

Oh sure!!! I have to make my husband tell me honestly what he thinks and make him understand that he's got to tell me what I want to hear not what he thinks I want to hear....he's my partner not just in marriage but in this caking adventure that we're on. He's been watching the videos that found on ytube by seriouscakes. I will watch a video on how to do something a little different to make my own style...I'm starting to feel more confident in what I am doing because I practice as often as I can. Having hubby help with his own culinary style (he's a chef/cook where he works a non profit emergency shelter for kids) he makes suggestions and then we try it out before decorating if it tastes palette-able then I decorate it. My major problem is my roses, I'm going to practice more and more with just doing roses until the roses start to look just like real roses...
