Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi group.

Any ideas on how one can get the word out or entice people about their new cake decorating biz.  I have brought in cakes (etc) to the work lunchroom. Got about four orders there, but how do I do this on a slightly larger scale? My current goal is to obtain 5 cake orders in a month.

Thanks!
I do think FB has been quite helpful
I do the same- take cakes in to work and to be honest haven't needed to do anything more! i get a lot of orders from friends and clients at work!! also, i have taken photos to my hairdesser when i'm getting my hair done- just to show what i do and have got orders that way too, It's word of mouth really, i get a lot of repeat orders. :)
Hey I say if you have an facebook make an group page a friend of mines did this in shes in NY and there were people calling for texas for their family members in NY I wish your business plenty of success..
Does your friend have a real bakeshop or bakery, i was told New York does not allow home-based bakery business?, Kind of my problem really, i bought a huge 20-quart mixer and other baking tools then found out i cannot sell online in New York because it is home-based..

Very much so.....I did a website via vistaprint....gotta change it...already having some issues with certain "folks"-

I have cards and I'm on facebook, but I am still cautious, with me attending culinary school (french) in the evenings, it helps.

Just a word of caution, if you are baking out of your home for money in a state that doesn't allow this and are not liscensed,,,,please be careful about how you advertise. The fines can be quite steep!!!
You could do birthday cakes for your friend's kids parties. Everyone will want to know where they got the cake from and they can pass on your details.  I've got orders from this, treating people at work to a cake or two and putting everything on Facebook.  I'm only just starting out so it has been friends and friends of friends. I've also just put up a poster at work with pictures of my cakes and carry around photos of my cakes with me everywhere so I can show people my work.  I've had quite a bit of interest and possible orders later in the year.

When you get a cake order for a party from work leave your business cards so the party guests will know who did the cake. I'm sure your cowokers won't mind and that will grow your noteriety pretty quickly.

Also I would think about doing a high visibility charity cake in your area. Find a local annual charity event that gets publicity and offer your services for free. If you get in the paper or on TV it would be worth it for the advertising.

Just an idea, and yes, make sure first that home based is legal in your area.
