Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

Hi group.

Any ideas on how one can get the word out or entice people about their new cake decorating biz.  I have brought in cakes (etc) to the work lunchroom. Got about four orders there, but how do I do this on a slightly larger scale? My current goal is to obtain 5 cake orders in a month.

Website, Facebook Page, Twitter Account? You can do most of those yourself. I can help you with those if you'd like. I'm pretty affordable. I'm mostly in the computer business but have taken an interest in cake decorating. My company is http://www.azitmgmt.com/ .

I can link together Website, Google Apps, Picasa, Twitter, Buzz, Facebook, Yahoo Pulse, Microsoft Live Spaces, etc, (everything you see here http://www.azitmgmt.com/preprod/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/azitmgmt... ) for $100 a year.
The price is For the cakes we bake community exclusively!!

Hello Mrs.Fashionista
Im new to having a cake biz too but i have been keeping busy i took a large sampling of cupcakes to my sons school and got 3 orders within 1 hour of dropping them off at the school, also i have been going around sampling to doctors offices and salons and in keep my coworkers full of cake so they cant forget me. im keeping busy with about 10 orders a month so maybe try that. I have business cards, a portfolio, and flyers. Have you done any of those things? Goodluck cant wait to hear how busy you are getting!
Thank you. I have already started these accounts. I think I am looking for something on a more personal scale.

Charmessa, how often do you bring them into work?

That's the way I started. Then pretty soon, people are telling other people about you. I'm going to the doctor on Monday, and I'm going to take a cake to the office staff as a "thank you". I also used Picasa photo editor to make a collage of some of my work with my name, phone number, email and web address. I asked my hair dresser to hang one up, I asked the day care center to hang one up, and I'm going to hang one up in the workroom where I teach. I've stayed busy just from word of mouth, and that's the best advertisement there is, anyway. I started in February and expected to do maybe one or two cakes a month. I've done at least one each week, sometimes as many as 6 in a week (hard to do while teaching full time...) This weekend, I have 4 to get done. Go to www.vistaprint.com and make some business cards and hand them out to EVERBODY you meet. You have to be willing to be a little pushy and get your business into every conversation you possibly can! :)
Jennifer thank you! I should have posted this question a long time ago.

Something else that I have done is to start a website. I'm just using the free blog service at Google right now, since it's free and I can set it up how I want it fairly easily. Hope this helps! :)

Just a word of caution, if you are baking out of your home for money in a state that doesn't allow this and are not liscensed,,,,please be careful about how you advertise. The fines can be quite steep!!!
That's something else that I thought of last night. Be careful. Right now, I have my blog set up like a diary and a "brag book". If your state (like mine) doesn't allow home-based food business, be careful how you set up your website. I had a wonderful one with prices, etc. but got rid of it. Even my cards are fun. I'm trying to find a kitchen to rent so that I can advertise as a full-fledged business within the next year. :)

Carmelo is right, Facebook is what I have made for my cakes... and I DEFINATELY get at LEAST 5/month and its pretty much friends and friends of friends, not to many "unknown" people so far =] word will get around. I have been doing this for only about 6 months now and can hardly keep up on my own!
