Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

I'm trying to figure out what I should do in the year 2012. I love making cake but also love making lolly pops and candy. I have only made cakes for my family, but nothing with that much design. I have taken plenty of Wilton cake classes. I know I can do it, but I'm trying to get a just one person outside of my family to give me a try. Also I'm still trying to do lolly pops and candy. Help needed.

Crunch time then. Which do you get more satisfaction from?
Why not simply combine the two and make cake pops? Bakerella has a fantastic book out and a website as well. You get the best of both worlds then.

Hi Marlene

I started making custom cakes 2 years ago. When I fell into it, I was actually trying to sell my cookies and candies into local shops. At first, the cakes were just for family and close friends (I'll call them BasePeeps). Thank goodness, b/c i still have issues with my timing and they all have been really understanding about that. That said, I have made quite a few cakes for people outside that circle. My BasePeeps have been amazing in spreading word of my talents to their families and friends. Some have attended the events the cakes were for and asked for business cards. Others were just referrals. One thing that has helped immensely is Facebook. I have a FB page that I use for my "business" to house pics of all my cakes, an order "form" and "menu" of almost all of my cookies and candies (with pics of those too). Ask all your friends & fam to "like" your page and share it with their FB friends. Whenever you post to your FB page, the post goes to everyone who "likes" your page and it generates more business! I also will "share" my posts through my personal FB page so people who haven't "liked" my page yet will see it too.

I don't think you have to choose yet. At least not until you've really given the cakes a go. If you keep doing both, you'll keep yourself quite busy.

Long story short... business cards, BasePeeps and Facebook to get more cakes! good luck and keep caking!!!
