Cake Decorating Community - Cakes We Bake

So,I am in no way a professional cake decorator.  I love doing it as a hobby and hope someday I may be able to make some money doing.  But I am curious what others might charge if they had made my cake.  So, just for fun I would appreciate knowing what you would have charged for my MULAN cake that I made for my kids' school play cast party.  It consisted of:

14 inch round

10 inch round

6 inch round

All covered in Fondant

Hand painted details

Fondant figures, etc

Because it was just for the school, I used boxed cake mixes.  I think the whole cake cost me between $50 and $60 to make.

Thanks in advance.

I made a single tier butterfly garden cake and charged £230.00 ($360) for it (probably fed about 25 people). I'd put 22 hours work into it and by the time I'd taken out the cost of the ingredients I was pretty happy with the money I'd charged. The customer is still talking about the wow factor today.

Don't cheapen your work or as well as your customer telling everyone what a great cake they got, they will also say how cheap they got it at the end. You will end up with alot of work for next to no money.

Test the water in your area & good luck

i agree with u there 100%, the problem is that everyone wants the best for free if they can help it

After reading every comment on this thread, all I can say is WOW. I absolutely live in the wrong area. My wedding cake wasn't actually a cake in the traditional sense. My husband and I built a custom stand. It was wooden boxes that were 3 3/4 inches tall. They were built to stack in a pyramid shape and we ordered cupcakes to go all the way around the each level of the pyramid with the top of the pyramid being a traditional 6" square cake. All totaled there were 250 cupcakes plus the 6" square cake. Each level of the pyramid had a different flavor cupcake with filling and the 6" square was red velvet with cream cheese filling. The cupcakes were iced with butter cream and a gum paste flower on top, the 6" square was fondant covered with a gum paste flower bouquet on top. The bakery was 80 miles away and the cost of the entire thing (including delivery and set up) was $375. I thought that was outrageous until I recently started doing cakes myself.
