What to use for fondant numbered cake toppers

Hi everyone,

 I am very new to cake decorating and have a question about what material is used to form numbers or letters for a cake topper. I used straws covered with fondant today, it worked out fairly well. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
